Climate change and sustainable environmental practices have become increasingly prominent topics in the public square. Sustainable landscaping, both for residential and commercial purposes, is an important part of those conversations.

What is Sustainable Landscaping

Sustainable landscaping includes strategies and practices that are used to conserve water and energy, reduce waste, and reduce water runoff. It also includes improving soil health, carbon sequestration, and creating habitats for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

What is the Importance of Sustainable Landscaping Practices for Commercial Properties

Due to their combined size, commercial properties have a significant environmental footprint. Sustainable landscaping practices for commercial properties help to mitigate this impact by reducing water consumption, reducing energy consumption, limiting chemical use, contributing to an improved ecological balance, and contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. Sustainable landscaping practices can have a positive financial impact by reducing the cost of water and energy. They can also enhance a property’s aesthetic appeal, thereby enhancing an organization’s brand value.

What to Know About Sustainable Landscaping Principles and Practices

There are four sustainable landscaping principles. First, treat water as a critical resource. Second, treat and manage the soil wisely, Third, choose plants, trees, and shrubs wisely. Fourth, conserve material resources.

Some excellent sustainable landscaping practices are:

  1. Install smart landscaping irrigation systems so the landscaping looks as good as possible without wasting water. By using smart irrigation controllers, surfaces won’t be overwatered. Such systems ensure water extends to the plant’s roots instead of pooling on the surface. When it rains, a smart system will know not to water, protecting the area and saving on water bills.
  2. Utilize low-maintenance plants that won’t require lots of irrigation. Use native plants and drought-resistant plants. Native plants are the most well-adapted to the local climate, so they require less water and maintenance.
  3. Control the use of fertilizers and pest control products. Use the right products, in the right proportions, and at the right times. Additionally, use bio-nutritional fertilizers to optimize natural fertilizing benefits.
  4. Consider the value of “grasscycling”–leaving the grass clippings on lawns after mowing instead of removing and bagging them. Since grass clippings decay quickly, they will release nutrients back into the soil.
  5. Use energy-efficient lighting in your landscaping applications. LED lighting for landscaping purposes is highly energy efficient and uses a fraction of the energy used by traditional halogen bulbs.
  6. Use sustainable hardscape elements like permeable pavers that will allow for better water infiltration and reduce stormwater runoff.
  7. Use sustainable weed management practices including mulching and manual removal to reduce reliance on pesticides.
  8. Create rain gardens and bioswales to attract wildlife and overcome the potential problems of soil erosion and the risk of flooding.
  9. Plan to plant for shade and wind protection, as appropriate.
